Property Taxes

This section provides information about the various Property Tax Programs run by the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue:

Check out our What's New section for an index of recent updates on Property Taxes (opens in new window).

  1. Rural Property Tax

Rural Property Tax applies to land outside cities, towns, districts and village boundaries in British Columbia. Rural property makes up 99.6% of British Columbia's land area.

  2.  Home Owner Grant

The Home Owner Grant is one of three property tax assistance programs offered by the province.

  3.  Property Transfer Tax

Property Transfer Tax is different from property tax. You pay Property Transfer Tax when you purchase or acquire an interest in a property.

  4.  Property Tax Deferment

Property Tax Deferment is one of three property tax assistance programs offered by the province.

  5.  School Tax

A separate residential tax rate is set for each school district according to the province's residential school tax rate formula, which has been used since 1991. That formula automatically reduces tax rates as the average property value rises.

  6.  First Nations Self-Taxation

If you have an interest in real property on First Nations land, the Indian Self Government Enabling Act exempts you from property taxation under every provincial enactment only if the First Nation has fulfilled the requirements of the Act.
