Hotel Room Tax

The hotel room tax rate is 8%.  You pay hotel room tax on all accommodation prices within the province, such as hotels, motels, resorts, bed and breakfasts, and similar establishments.

Most British Columbia municipalities and regional districts collect an additional tax of up to 2% on the purchase price of the accommodation.  This tax is used to develop their local tourism industry.  However, the total hotel room tax charged does not exceed 10%.

An operator who offers four or more units of accommodation is required to charge the hotel room tax. Exemptions include: tent or trailer sites; lodging priced at $30 or less per day; accommodation without amenities such as heat, electricity or indoor plumbing; and accommodation rented to the same person for a period of 30 days or more.
